Spring 2020: N220D17 - AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism

This course is to prepare students for the AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism exam in May 2020.

Instructional Approach

The class consists of three components:

  1. For some of the lessons, students are required to take a 10 to 25 minutes multimedia lesson before coming to class.  The self-study lesson includes basic concepts, derivation of equations, and demo of physics principles.  After studying the lesson, each student will take a short review quiz to ensure the basic understanding of the concept presented.  Failure to complete work before each class will result in dismissal from the program.

  2. During class, we will focus on problem solving.  Problems from SAT Physics II, AP Physics C Mechanics, USA Physics Olympiad, and US Physics Bowl will be selected during class discussions.

  3. After the class, students will work on 10 - 20 required homework problems as well as optional contest preparation problems.  Homework will be graded and solutions available online after graded homework is returned to students.

USA Physics Olympiad

The USA Physics Olympiad Exam will have two levels of competition:

  • Preliminary Exam will be held at the end of January.  Top 400 students nationally will be invited to take the semifinal exam.  The preliminary exam is a 25-question multiple choice exam covering topics in Classical Newton Mechanics.  Students will have 75 minutes to complete the exam.
  • Semifinal Exam will be held at the end of March.  Top 20 students will be invited to join the USA Physics Team.  Roughly top 160 students will be awarded with gold, silver, broze and honorable mention recognitions.  The semifinal exam is a 6-question, 3-hour free-response exam.  Students are expected to write complete solutions to these problems.  The exam covers all topics taught at an entry-level college physics class.
